Slow Finance Unico International Campus Conference
We are delighted to invite you to "Money as if Finance Mattered 4", a one-day workshop at the University of Turin on Sunday, 4 October 2026. The workshop will focus on money in agent-based modelling. In the evening, we will bring the scholars that are coming to the Slow Finance UNiCO International Campus at Costigliole d'Asti, at Poderi Prunotto Fantolino, Strada Santa Radegonda 7, Annunziata; and then we will work there for the next three days, Monday to Wednesday, 5th to 7th of October.
This will be the fourth meeting in the Money as if Finance Mattered series. The series began with a workshop in Berlin, continued with a meeting in Manchester, and met for a third time online after the Manchester workshop. The fourth meeting turns to a focused question: what must agent-based models get right if they are to represent money seriously?
We have particularly appreciated the work on the interaction between finance and the real economy, financial and business cycles, capital flows and macroeconomic simulation. We would have an alternate 20-minute position talk on how endogenous money and financial instability should be carried from post-Keynesian macro models into an agent-based setting: which heterogeneities, balance-sheet positions, international linkages and behavioural mechanisms need to become explicit, and what is gained or lost in making that move.
We ask each speaker to address, from the standpoint of their own work: how they understand money in relation to agent-based modelling; how they think money should be represented; the principal conceptual, empirical or computational challenges; and the most promising strategies for tackling them. We do not expect a new paper. Slides are optional, and the talks will be grouped into panels with collective discussion after each group.
The invited speakers currently under invitation are: Anush Kapadia (IIT Bombay), Andrew Jackson (University of Surrey), Torsten Heinrich (Chemnitz University of Technology), Tanya Araújo (ISEG, Universidade de Lisboa), Dirk Bezemer (University of Groningen), Alessandro Caiani (IUSS Pavia), Pietro Terna (University of Turin / Collegio Carlo Alberto), Giulia Iori (Ca’ Foscari University of Venice), Iñaki Aldasoro (Bank for International Settlements), Karsten Kohler (University of Leeds), Penny Mealy (World Bank / Monash University / INET Oxford), Wouter Jacobs (Erasmus University Rotterdam), Andrea Gurgone (University of Oxford / INET Oxford), Marcela Lopes Alves (University of Oxford / INET Oxford), Anja Janischewski (Chemnitz University of Technology), Verena Gradinger (Global Climate Forum / Freie Universität Berlin), Eduardo C. Ferraciolli (ISEG, Universidade de Lisboa), Jonas Kai Kurle (University of Oxford), Claudius Gräbner-Radkowitsch (Europa-Universität Flensburg / Johannes Kepler University Linz). This is a tentative group rather than a list of confirmed participants.
The workshop is being organized by Aleksandar Stojanović, together with Carla Coburger, Jay D. Pocklington, Christina Mosalagae, Matteo Basei Fantolino and John D. Haskell. The Center for Monetary System Research is the organizing institution and runs the Money as Finance Research Network. The workshop has support from the Young Scholars Initiative, Slow Finance, the University of Manchester and the Container Havens project.
